Stereotypes – Blondes

As a strawberry blonde I’ve had my fair share of fair-haired jokes and while most roll right off my back, occasionally I want to pull out my SAT, GMAT, GRE and other various standardized measurements.

BlondeCan you be dumb and make a perfect score on the quantitative sections? I suppose it is statistically possible….

The Sunday Times (UK) reports on a study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology that set out to determine the effect blondes have on male performance….

Intellectual performance that is.

After correcting for the potential distraction, men were shown pictures of fair-headed women. The result, the men performed noticeably worse on the tests. The men unconsciously mimicked the “dumb blonde stereotype.”

This is closely related to the result shown in a separate study that determined people walk and talk more slowly in front of the elderly.

So perhaps before you lash out at the lovely blonde, consider that she may have more power over you than you care to acknowledge publicly.

You silly boys: blondes make men act dumb

  1. Hi Kate,

ROFL. I wonder, is it that they are mimicking the stereotype, do you think? Or were they so aroused/stimulated that it made them more stupid?

    Perfect score. NICE!

Ah yes. I’m a very intelligent blonde. Any man who dates me is initially drawn to the blonde, buxom part. Those who stick around enjoy the conversation, intelligence and fun (kinda like you, lady!), too! lol. TG or it would be REALLY really boring… for me! lol

  2. women do indeed make inferior males inferior….er.

norm, on cheers (old tv show from the 80’s) “Women, can’t live with ’em….pass the beer nuts.”

email me the link to the report on that study. would love to see it.

  3. Kate,

reminds me of the “Don’t Hate Me Because I am Beautiful” ads… (Kelly LeBrock? but she’s a brunette)

I have met many very intelligent and also very beautiful people in my life (including my wife) and I don’t thing that there is any inverse relationship.

Although watching this season of Survivor may change my impression of blondes 🙂

  4. I couldn’t agree more with this post – being the blonde I am! I can’t begin to tell you the situations I’ve been in through out my life because of it. Some were good – others not so much. And the jokes – I pretty much took it all in stride. When we went to Can Cun a few years back, with four other couples, one of the guys and I were the two blondes in the group. We got all kinds of service/attention before the rest of the group just because of our blondeness. They loved us down there – no joking around – we got the royal treatment.

Fun article in favor of blondes – for a change!!!!
