Some locals have voiced concern regarding their drinking water after discovering it contained unsafe levels of lead. Children were deemed most at risk of lead exposure, especially those enrolled in Medicaid or living in older housing. A long history of heavy industry in the East Bay also left the soil contaminated in some areas. Lead exposure is common in other East Bay areas. Meanwhile, elevated exposure levels were also found to be a problem in larger neighborhoods surroundings. In light of these concerns, an ordinance has been proposed; this would require proof that contractors will adhere to Environmental Protection Agency standards. These standards include safe practices for lead removal when beginning renovations on older buildings.
