In my opinion, all Unions need to be dissolved. It is hard to get the best out of people if they are Unionized, the live in an area of comfort.

The public school system was entirely set up to have a socialist tilt to it. That is its very purpose with the government providing education with the money it steals from land owners to inculcate children unto socialism. My teachers tended to leave politics out all together or present several different ways of looking at an issue. I’m greatful they did.

Taking things literally:
- “liberal” = “favourable to progress or reform”
- “conservative” = “disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change”

I know which teachers I’d prefer my children to be taught by – assuming we want a progressive society!

I like the method you’ve used to prove or disprove the statement that “teaching attracts liberals”. My wife, who is deeply into politics, will find your conclusions quite interesting, as they seem to bolster her opinions. I look forward to your next post on this.

Also, I’m in complete agreement with you that politics should be left out of the classroom.

I have a friend who taught high school and is now going for a principal position. She’s a republican. I have another friend who teaches kindergaren in South Central. I’ll have to check with her. I’ll have a talk with both of them about their views and see just how liberal they are! lol

I agree that politics should be left out of the classroom. From what I can recall – grade school to university – I remember my teachers and professors always leaving the political opinions ambiguous and neutral, this forced us to form our own opinions. And as curious minds do, we also spent a fair amount of time discussing whether we thought our professor was right or left based on our different assumptions.

AS for the the “Meeting Highly Qualified Teacher’s Challenge” — that’s shocking and scary!

Teachers are overwhelmingly liberal for a number of reasons, similar to the reasons that there are so many liberals in journalism and community organizing…

1. Teaching attracts the starry-eyed, I just want to help other people and “make a difference”. These types of people are often the ends justify the means types when it comes to politics.

2. Teaching is among the easiest academically to qualify for, certainly in the past this was true, and ONCE YOU ARE IN there is no way to get rid of you (unless you do something conservative).

3. Teaching school is predominately staffed by liberals and the edcation student is still a skull full of much being molded by the faculty. The education student simply isn’t around many conservative thinkers to get balance.

4. Teaching is heavily unionized and it requires somewhat of a collectivist mentality to go into a system where merit is pretty much thrown out the window from the get-go.

I am sure there are other reasons, but this is the bulk of it I think…
